While many survival skills are often framed within the context of the great outdoors, there are also certain important survival skills that can be applicable within an urban environment. Living in the city may come with many comforts and luxuries, but these can easily disappear during a survival situation.
When SHTF, it’s important to have a comprehensive set of survival skills you can rely on. Here are five essential urban prepping tips every prepper should follow. (h/t to UrbanSurvivalSite.com)
Applying first aid in an emergency is not as simple as putting on a bandage. From knowing how to clean and suture minor wounds to administering CPR, learning the fundamentals of first aid can go a long way in helping you be prepared for anything. Time is of the essence during a medical emergency, and instinctively knowing what to do when someone is injured may mean the difference between life and death. Take the time to learn the basics on how to treat minor cuts and burns and work your way up to learning how to fashion splints for fractures and broken bones. Enrolling in first aid classes can help you learn medical emergency assessment and how to perform a number of relevant first aid applications.
A fully stocked survival food pantry is a must-have for any prepper in case of food emergencies. But survival stockpiling requires a little more strategy than simply picking whatever food options you fancy at your grocery store. It’s important to have plenty of shelf-stable food options that are packed with beneficial nutrients to help fuel your body and keep you energized. Some long-lasting food options that belong in your survival pantry include honey, powdered milk, instant coffee, dried beans, nuts and seeds. Don’t forget to round out your survival stockpile with oats, whole grains, complex carbs and freeze-dried fruits and vegetables.
Now that you have your own survival stockpile, it’s time to take it to the next level with an urban survival garden. Growing your very own survival garden can help provide you with a sustainable source of fresh fruits and vegetables to further supplement your food supply. Root crops, such as potatoes, red beets, carrots and turnips, make excellent candidates for your survival garden. Not only are they packed with important nutrients but they are also reasonably easy to grow.
Having reliable access to clean, drinking water is a must for any prepper in case SHTF. Even if you are able to get running water from the tap, this may not be immediately safe to drink. Before drinking from any water source you can access, be sure to boil, filter or purify the water first, preferably a combination of the three. Boiling the water can effectively eliminate germs while water filters or water purification tablets can help remove chemical contaminants. You can even build your own water filtration system with some charcoal, rocks, grass and sand. (Related: Prepping basics: Essential tips on how to prepare for a long-term water supply disruption.)
Starting a fire is one of the most basic survival skills every prepper should learn. During a power outage, a simple fire can help provide heat and light, allow you to cook food and boil water, as well as signal for help if you’re in need of a rescue. While you can start a fire with regular matches or lighters, you can also get a few sparks going with some flint and steel or a simple lens.
